Application
Applications for recognition as advanced practice midwives are accepted
1. Who can apply?
The Midwives Council of Hong Kong ("the Council") has endorsed that a currently employed registered midwife in Hong Kong meeting the following criteria should be eligible to apply for recognition as an advanced practice midwife:
- has obtained a Master degree in MidwiferyNote 1 ; or
- has obtained a Master degree in health related streamNote 1 AND completed a total of 60 hours of the specialised midwifery coursesNote 2 as recognised by the Council; or
- is a Fellow of The Hong Kong Academy of Nursing & Midwifery (“HKANM”)(formerly known as The Hong Kong Academy of Nursing ("HKAN")) in the specialty of Midwifery who was admitted in 2012, 2013 or 2014; or is a Fellow of the HKANM in the specialty of Midwifery who has obtained a Master degree in health related stream; AND
- possessed six years of full time post-registration experience in midwifery practice immediately prior to his/her application.
Note 1: The lists of recognised master programmes, which have been compiled with reference to courses recognised as attaining Level 6 of the Hong Kong Qualifications Framework, are provided below. They are subject to regular review and update. For non-local qualifications which are not included in the lists, applicants are required to apply for assessment services from the Hong Kong Council for Accreditation of Academic and Vocational Qualifications (“HKCAAVQ”).

Note 2: Specialised midwifery courses should be provided by accredited Post-registration Education in Midwifery ("PEM") providers in Hong Kong, local / non-local universities and/or international certification bodies as recognised by the Council. The providers should conduct assessments on the completion of the specialised midwifery courses and the duration of each course should be at least six hours or above. For e-learning programmes (i.e. self-studying programmes), the number of study hours to be counted for each self-study programme is capped at 30 hours. The list of recognised specialised midwifery courses, detailing the number of study hours of each self-study programme, is provided below. It is subject to regular review and update.

2. Application Procedures
The applicant should complete the application form and enclose originals and photocopies or notarized copies of the following to his/her current employer:
- Graduation certificate / transcripts of studies of a Master degree in Midwifery / health related stream, if any, and where applicable, a true copy of the qualifications assessment report issued by the HKCAAVQ;
- Proof of completion of a total of 60 hours of the specialised midwifery courses, if applicable;
- Diploma of fellowship of The Hong Kong Academy of Nursing & Midwifery (“HKANM”) in the specialty of midwifery, if applicable;
- Documentary proof(s) certifying the total number of years of full time post-registration experience in midwifery practice immediately prior to his/her application issued and/or certified by his/her employer(s); and
- Declaration form completed not more than six months before the application for recognition.
Upon receipt of the application, the current employer should certify the duration of full time post-registration experience in midwifery practice of the applicant concerned immediately prior to the application. The employer should check, certify and submit the applications together with the supporting documents in one lot for its employees whose eligibility are ascertained to the Central Registration Office of the Department of Health.
